Session Outline
The presentation relates to the research and results from my dissertation as part of the Med in Tertiary and Higher Education. The topic aligns with the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lens by highlighting the range of methods professional lecturers utilise to remove potential barriers to learner engagement in the online classroom. Largely the presentation belongs within the Learning and Teaching Delivery SLE Building Block but has the scope to touch on other blocks within the SLE model. The presentation highlights the variety of practical applications of pedagogy employed by individual professional lecturers teaching in the online environment with the aim of promoting student engagement. Examples of how students are supported to undertake self-directed learning will be highlighted allowing for opportunities to learn independently outside the classroom. The presentation features different ways to promote peer and interactive learning in the online classroom removing barriers that are sometimes present when faced with the challenges of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Ways in which staff facilitate a respectful, constructive and compassionate learning environment will be unveiled leading onto how consideration for the wider context of students' lives raises the question of what constitutes student engagement? Links will be made to educator personality and how this might influence student engagement in the online classroom and will answer the question, can personality be changed for the benefit of learning and teaching? The presentation will provide a summary to new and developing lecturers looking to promote student engagement in the online classroom.

Kerry Paul
I teach largely on the Equine Business Degree and came to UHI North West Hebrides (Thurso) after a career working in the equine industry. I have always had a passion for teaching which began many years ago teaching people to horse ride. Completing the TQFE boosted that passion motivating me to continue on and complete the Masters in Tertiary and Higher Education.
